WebWatcher
WebWatcher Detail
As a reviewer of this sort of software I can't just expect you to trust me when I say that WebWatcher is the best of the bunch - you don't know me from Adam after all. All I can do is tell you what WebWatcher does and why, after extensive research, I chose WebWatcher and then let you make your own mind up. If you have any questions, please feel free to Contact Me.
What Will WebWatcher Record?
Instant Messages & Chat Programs
WebWatcher records all chat conversations. This is essential because sexual predators lurk in chat rooms and may wish to harm your child. By monitoring your child's chat room activity you can ensure that they are using these facilities safely. WebWatcher has native support for AIM, AIM Triton, Windows Messenger, MSN Messenger and Yahoo Messenger (YIM). Other instant messengers can be tracked via the Screen Capture facility (Smart Camera).
Web Sites Visited | |
WebWatcher will record details of all the web sites your child visits. This means that you can check to make sure that your child is not visiting sites you don't want them to. If you should find them visiting undesirable sites, you can block those sites. | ![]() Click To See Screenshots |
Emails Received | |
Any emails sent and received in popular email programs will be recorded. WebWatcher has native support for AOL Webmail, MySpace Mail, Outlook, Outlook Express (Windows Mail), Windows Live Mail (Hotmail) and Yahoo Mail. However, even the more obscure email programs can be recorded using the Screen Capture facility (see Smart Camera below). This means you can make sure your child is not involved in email conversations with people who may harm them.
Keystrokes | |
WebWatcher can record all keystrokes entered into the computer being monitored and this includes any user names and passwords that have been typed. Keystrokes are recorded in both raw and formatted modes. | ![]() |
What Sort Of Blocking Does WebWatcher Do?
Website Blocking | |

|
Program Blocking | |
![]() Click To See Screenshots | WebWatcher can block programs from running on the target computer. It allows you to set up schedules for when you want the blocks to activate. You can set up many different schedules or just one covering all times. Then you can add a list of programs you wish to block from running during the times specified in the schedule. |
Additional WebWatcher Features.
Alert Words | Smart Camera |
WebWatcher's Alert Words facility allows you to configure words and phrases that, when entered by child into the computer, will trigger a special warning. These could be words like 'sex' or 'gambling' or anything that might indicate your child's computer use is drifting into dangerous areas. The warnings can be set up to trigger the Smart Camera (see right) into action if you wish | The Smart Camera facility allows you to set up WebWatcher so that it takes periodic snapshots of your child's computer. It can take these snapshots either when an Alert Word (described left) is entered or when a particular application is activated. This is a really useful feature because it allows you to see the screens exctly as your child saw them, as if you were looking over their shoulder. |

Additional Information
Requirements
WebWatcher runs on Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista. You need an Internet connection and a browser such as Internet Explorer (version 6 and above) or Mozilla Firefox to access the viewing interface.WebWatcher runs with all the popular anti-virus software. I have tested it with Norton (Symantec), McAfee, Agintum Outpost and Zone Alarm without problems. It checks to make sure it can run with your anti-virus software during installation.
Installation
Installation is just a matter of following the online screens and should take no longer than a few minutes.I have screenshots of the installation process here if you'd like to see them.
Better still, support technicians will install the software for you for free if you'd prefer. You need access to the computer that WebWatcher will be monitoring for the installation process, but you don't need access to it after that as all logs can be viewed remotely.
Invisibility
WebWatcher is totally undetectable on the target machine.Money-Back Guarantee
WebWatcher comes with a full 5-day money-back guarantee, so it can be purchased without risk.Problems, Complaints and Bad Points
- WebWatcher is amongst the more expensive Parental Control Software packages. I think it justifies its price in functionality but this may be a concern to you if you're on a tight budget.
- The company runs a two-tier support system and to get 'priority' support for WebWatcher you have to pay an additional $29.99/year. Their standard support is very good anyway, so it's not a worry, but I don't like two-tier support systems. I think first class support should be a 'right' when one buys software.
- WebWatcher's Smart Camera comes with 1000 free screen captures and then you have to pay extra to get more. A 10,000 screen capture 'block' (for $17) will last a long time but I think this should be free.
- WebWatcher only comes with a 5-day trial period. Whilst this is generally enough to test a product I think a 2-week trial period would be better.
WebWatcher Conclusion
| Despite the 'Problems, Complaints & Bad Points' I noted above, WebWatcher still stands head and shoulders above the competition. If you want the most effective way to keep your kids safe online (other than unplugging the computer from the Internet!) then WebWatcher is what you need. The fact that you can monitor your child's activity from anywhere - without needing to sign onto their computer - is a huge advantage. It is a little more expensive that other Parental Control Software packages but you get what you pay for and it's still a small price to pay to keep kids safe from Internet predators. You certainly have nothing to lose by using the risk-free 5-day money-back period to see if the product suits you. Don't forget you can take WebWatcher out for a test drive too. WebWatcher has an extensive set of features to help protect your kids and I believe it is worthy of its place as the number 1 Parental Control Software package. |

What Makes My Reviews Different?Virtually all software has bad points - nothing is perfect. I don't sugar-coat my reviews like many do. You'll get both the good and the bad points from me. Furthermore, I actually buy and use the software myself! You'd be amazed at how many so-called 'honest reviewers' have never even tested the software they're reviewing. |
